Sport The first permanent European settlements in New Zealand were sealing gangs in Fiordland (Dusky Sound) and around Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island. The seals were slaughtered in great numbers. Conditions for the sealers were harsh and uncomfortable and they were often left for long periods to fend for themselves.
