Just out of Temuka on the way to Waitohi is a memorial to Richard Pearse on the site where he made his pionering powered flight before crashing into trees. Pearse's flight took place 9 months before the Wright brothers' celebrated "first" powered flight though Pearse himself even admitted that his early attempt was not "sustained controlled flight".
