Moeraki Boulders on the Otago Coast
|
Moeraki, (moe: sleep, sleepy raki: the sky) at one time the location of a whaling station is a small fishing village on the North Otago Coast. Prior to the colonial era Moeraki was also the site of a Maori pa (fort). A local attraction is the curious round boulders on the beach north of the village.
According to Maori tradition the boulders were food baskets washed ashore from "Arai-te-uru" an ocean going canoe which had shipwrecked at Shag Point. |
